Alipore Zoological Garden - The Oldest Zoo in India

The Alipore Zoological Garden is one of the biggest and oldest zoos in India and is located in Kolkata. The idea for this zoo was first discussed in 1842 but it only gained recognition when Dr Joseph Bart Fayrer (president of Asiatic Society of Bengal) and Carl Louis Schwendler who was the postmaster to the Government of India at that time indicated their willingness to construct a zoo in Bengal. With their insistence, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Sir Richard Temple, approved a site near Alipore and sanctioned Rs. 5000 for the construction of the zoo. Over the next few years, its prominent patrons donated a lot of exotic animals and birds to the zoo. This zoo is also called Alipore Zoo, Calcutta Zoo or Kolkata Zoo. The Alipore Zoological Garden is spread over an area of 45 acres and was made open to the general public on 1st May 1876. It has a vast and unique collection of wild animals, flowers, plants and trees.

The Alipore Zoological Garden houses a wide range of carnivorous, herbivorous and omnivorous animals like the African Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, White Tiger, Hippopotamus, Leopard, Jaguar, Fishing cat, Jungle cat, Great Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, Reticulated Giraffe, Dromedary Camel, Grant's Zebra, Chimpanzee, Hamadryas baboon, Olive baboon, Common marmoset, Bonnet monkey, Rhesus monkey, Assamese monkey, Indian Elephant, Swamp deer, Brow Antlered deer, Sambar deer, Hog deer, Barking deer, Spotted deer, White Fallow deer, Nilgai, Black Buck, Common Laguar, Bengal Porcupine, Giant Squirrel and Red Kangaroo.

The zoo also has a vast collection of birds like a number of Pigeons, Parrots, Cockatoos, Macaws, Conures, Bulbuls, Lories, Lorikeets, Myna, Touracos, Hornbills, Golden Pheasant, Lady Amherst's Pheasant, Swinhoe's Pheasant, Goose, Pelicans, Storks, Eagle, Kite, Peacock, Ostrich, Emu, Cassowary and Koel. The migratory birds like the Sarus Crane are also a famous attraction of the Alipore Zoological Garden.


Entry Fees and Timings

The visiting hours are from 9 am to 5 pm. The zoo is closed every Thursday. The entrance fees are Rs. 10 for children up to 5 years and Rs 30 per person for visitors above 5 years. There is an Rs. 5 charge if you also want to visit the aquarium. There is also an Rs. 250 per hour charge for video photography.
